Rune info:

I have come across, in my viking research, a rune which I hadn't ever seen before. It is from the Northumbrian runeset (c.800CE, somewhat later than other runesets), and equates to the letter 'Q' - it is called cweorth (pronunciation unknown; medieval equivalent "quaitra"). I've seen at least two different ways to draw it, so it seems to be in dispute. The meaning, however, is what caught my attention:

"Cweorth signifies the ascending, swirling flames of ritual fire. This can be the celebratory bonfire, the supplicating need-fire, or the fire of the funeral pyre. Whichever fire is meant, Cweorth embodies the concept of ritual cleansing by means of fire. All fires are a microcosmic reflection of the sacred hearth."

Another source identified it with the Sumbol, the ceremonial gathering around a ritual fire to drink to your deeds and your ancestors. Unanimously, every source I have found references purifying, ritual fire. Kaunaz represents the physical, useful aspect of fire. Cweorth is specifically the spiritual aspect.

There wasn't any RSVPS except for 1 maybe for the picnic, so I am cancelling it for now and will try again once the community gets moving a bit. :)

Have a Happy 4th!

Intro To Harry [Jun. 28th, 2006|04:50 pm]

Hello, there, pagans and pagan-interested.

I'm Harry. (HI, HARRY!)

I'm a gay agnostic originally from South Central Pennsylvania. Yes, it's true; Amishland. I myself am not Amish, though the influence shows in my thought-processes even today.

I grew up in a family with no defined faith. I found one myself when I was 9, when I joined the local Methodist Church. I was a star pupil; I enjoy reading more than almost anything, and the Bible is a LONG book. My church was evangelistic; we were very much in the vein of the holy rollers.

One day, some things were discovered that led to discoveries of my own. I discovered that I didn't really believe in any higher power....but I didn't exactly disbelieves, either. The most I could say was that the facts of the matter were nebulous and unproven. Thus I "tabled an unanswerable question".

I believe that science and empirical proof is as much a matter of faith as any religion. Our senses are not reliable, and we put our faith into them, the same as an old nun puts her faith in the Christian god.

I am, for sentimental reasons, drawn to Wicca. The power of nature is something into which I could perhaps put faith. That leaves me with a bit of a quandary, though, for a proper witch accepts death as inevitable, and I rail against it. I find it wasteful in the extreme. That is my biggest hurdle.

If I think of more, I'll post again. For now, I think this will serve. :)

Welcome To Pagan Planning! [Jun. 28th, 2006|09:45 am]

As you probably know, I'm Amber, and I follow no traditional religious set. As in none. Really. And it's on purpose. It's hard to explain, but I am sure I will get to it. :D

First, some housekeeping:

I would like another moderator at least to help me with the community, accept invites, salt the trolls, etc. If you're interested, please give a brief but compelling argument below.

This is a free account for now. This may change.

This place needs some icons. You know I loves my icons, and I want to add as much personality to this place as I can... and not just my personality.

Last but not least, a kickoff question:

What is a pagan?

*blush* Now that it's under the right community. :P
